Professor Jae-hoon Kim(Department of Physics) at Yonsei University observed and identified the 'supermassive magnetic resistance phenomenon in phase magnetic semiconductors through joint research with researchers from Professor Joon-sung Kim(POSTECH, IBS), Dr. Kyu Kim(Korea Institute of Atomic Energy), and Professor Yang Beom-jung(Seoul National University, IBS).
Colossal Angular Magnetoresistance (Colossal Angular Magnetoresistance) is a phenomenon in which the resistance changes up to 1 billion times according to the angle of the crystal axis of the aligned spin in a magnetic semiconductor.
The researchers conducted specific resistance measurements and Terahertz spectroscopy experiments using an external magnetic field to adjust the direction of spin in a Mn3Si2Te6 single crystal in a phase magnetic semiconductor material, and observed that the conductivity changes more than 1 billion times according to the direction of the external magnetic field and the ‘bad body-metal phase transition phenomenon’in which the bad body state changes to the metal state.
In addition, it was theoretically determined that the supermassive angular magnetic resistance phenomenon appears according to the angle of the spin aligned through the topological electronic state.
“In general, magnetic materials have a small magnetic resistance, but Mn3Si2Te6, the phase magnetic semiconductor discovered this time, the resistance change according to the angle is more than 100,000 times greater than conventional magnetic materials,”said Professor Jae-hoon Kim, Yonsei University.
The results were published online on November 25 in Nature(IF 49.962), the world's leading journal.
